PREPARING TO STUDY IN SINGAPORE

International students seeking admission to mainstream public schools in Singapore should note that English is the medium of instruction and are strongly encouraged to prepare themselves before sitting for the AEIS tests. They should be familiar with the English and Mathematics syllabus of the level preceding the one they are applying for.

International students who are successfully admitted to mainstream public schools are strongly encouraged to prepare themselves in advance for a new school environment where English is the language of classroom instruction, and to familiarise themselves with the relevant curriculum for their level. International students who wish to undertake preparatory courses before or at the start of their entry into schools could refer to the Singapore Education website.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE?

1) The foreign student may begin a 5-month or 11-month preparatory course at a language centre (e.g. Hua Language Centre) to brush up language skills before enrolling in a local school the following year. The duration of study will depend on the student's initial proficiency of English and his rate of progress. Most of the foreign students opt for this form of preparation.

OR

2) The foreign student may, without prior preparation, join the local school at the beginning or the middle of the academic year, provided there is a vacancy in a school and the student has attained the relevant standard set by the school in English, Mathematics, and Second Language.

Foreign students may approach the Singapore Schools directly to register to sit for the placement test. While waiting to enter a local school, foreign students could in the meantime begin an intensive preparatory course at a private language centre to prepare for the entrance exams conducted by the local schools. Hua Language Centre is such a Centre that has the experience and expertise to cater for such students.
