PREPARATORY COURSE
FOR STUDYING IN SINGAPORE LOCAL SCHOOLS
There is presently a growing trend in the South-East Asian region for students
to pursue their education in Singapore. This trend can
be attributed to the success of Singapore's bilingual educational
system. Students immersed in such an educational system
are known to emerge effectively bilingual in both English
as well as their mother tongue. This proficiency in two
languages stands the student in good stead as he enters
the working world.
Foreign students vying for a place in the local schools are, however, expected
to pay higher school fees. In addition, foreign students
are required to pay a biennial donation of S$1000 to the
Ministry of Education's Educational Fund for every two
years of study in Singapore. As such, parents who wish
to enroll their child in a local school should not only
bear these criteria in mind, but should also consider the
disparity between the child's proficiency of English and the standard of English in Singapore.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE?
1) The foreign student may begin a 5-months or 11-months preparatory course at
a language centre (e.g. Hua Language Centre) to brush
up language skills before enrolling in a local school
the following year. The duration of study will depend on the student's initial proficiency of English and his rate of progress. Most of the foreign
students opt for this form of preparation.
OR
2) The foreign student may, without prior preparation, join the local school
at the beginning or the middle of the academic year, provided there is a vacancy
in a school and the student has attained the relevant standard set by the school
in English, Mathematics, and Second Language.
Foreign students may approach the Singapore Schools directly to register to sit
for the placement test. While waiting to enter a local
school, foreign students could in the meantime begin an
intensive preparatory course at a private language centre
to prepare for the entrance exams conducted by the local
schools. Hua Language Centre is such a Centre that has
the experience and expertise to cater for such students.
